Air fryers: the sizes that make sense and the prices that don't

A six-quart basket does almost everything the giant countertop ovens do, so most of this page is about deciding when bigger actually earns its space.

The number that matters isn't quarts, it's how much floor the basket has. Air frying is convection: hot air has to reach every surface, so a single layer browns and a heaped basket steams. Doubling the advertised volume rarely doubles what cooks well at once. It usually buys a second rack and a much bigger footprint. Prime Big Deal Days is when this category gets loud. A struck-through list price on an air fryer is usually the seller's own number rather than a price anyone paid, so judge the asking price on its own terms. Prices here were checked September 29, 2026. The eight below split cleanly into five baskets and three oven-style units, and the price ladder inside each group is steeper than the difference in what they cook. The last two picks are a lot of countertop for what they do, and they sit at the bottom of the page for that reason.

Chefman 2 qt Mini, digital

Forty dollars for two quarts, a digital timer and a dishwasher-safe basket. At this size it reheats and crisps for one person, which is a real job and the one most air fryers are oversized for.

Watch outTwo quarts is a single portion. Anything you would put on a dinner plate is already two batches.

Chefman TurboFry 8 qt, 450°F

Eight quarts and a 450°F setting for seventy dollars, which is the most basket volume per dollar on this page. The higher top temperature is the part worth having — browning wants heat, not time.

Ninja Air Fryer Pro, 5 qt (AF142)

The same asking price as the Cosori for a quart less capacity, with 4.7 stars behind it. Five quarts covers two or three people, and the smaller footprint is the real difference on a crowded counter.

Chefman XL Digital Air Fryer + Rotisserie, 10 L

Under $70 for a 10-liter oven-style unit with rotisserie and dehydrate settings is the most machine per dollar on this page. The 4.2 average is also the lowest here, which is part of what that price buys.

Emeril Lagasse French Door Air Fryer Oven, 26 qt

Emeril Lagasse French Door Air Fryer Oven, 26 qt

French doors swing out sideways instead of dropping down, which saves the clearance a standard oven door eats. Against that: it is rated 4.3, below everything here but the 10-liter Chefman, and 26 quarts is a lot of counter to surrender.

Watch outAt this size you're buying a second oven, and it will be the largest thing on the counter.

Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro

This is a countertop oven that also air fries, not an air fryer that also bakes. It only makes sense at this price if it replaces your toaster oven outright and gets used most days.

What actually matters here

  • 01Cook in a single layer. An air fryer is a small convection oven with a strong fan, and food that overlaps traps moisture and comes out pale instead of crisp. Two quick batches beat one crowded one.
  • 02Quarts and liters describe the chamber, not what fits in one usable layer. Two people rarely need more than five quarts, and if you cook for a crowd a second rack matters more than raw volume.
  • 03Basket units and air-fryer toaster ovens are different appliances. A basket heats up in a couple of minutes and washes in the sink. An oven-style unit is slower to come to temperature but bakes, toasts and takes a sheet pan.
  • 04Top temperature matters more than wattage. Browning is a temperature reaction, so a unit that reaches 450°F crisps in ways one that stops at 400°F cannot, whatever the cook time says.
  • 05Check the basket coating and whether it's dishwasher safe. Nonstick is what makes cleanup tolerable and it's also the part that wears first, so a basket you can lift out and wash properly stays usable longer.
  • 06Measure the counter and the space above it. These vent hot air from the back or top and need clearance there, which is what catches people sliding one under a wall cabinet.

Questions people actually ask

Does a higher-wattage air fryer cook faster?
Not meaningfully. Most countertop units sit in the same rough range because a standard US outlet limits what they can draw. Preheat time, basket size and how much you load in move the clock far more than the wattage figure does.
Do I need to preheat an air fryer?
For most things, yes, and in a basket model it takes two or three minutes. Starting cold leaves food sitting in warming air while the element ramps up, which is how things go soft instead of crisp. Oven-style units take noticeably longer to preheat.
Is an air fryer just a small convection oven?
Essentially, yes. The difference is geometry: a small chamber and a strong fan push hot air past the food much faster than a full-size oven can, which is why cook times drop. A convection oven does the same job on a larger scale, more slowly.
